Mangala Sutta
Men, and deities, for twelve years, have tried to find out the meaning of blessing. They could not even find out the meaning of the thirty-eight blessings that are the cause of happiness. Oh, Noble Ones! Les us recite those blessings, which destroy all evil, taught by the Deity of Deities, for the benefit of all beings. Thus have I heard: On one occasion the Exalted One was dwelling at the monastery of Anathapindika, in Jeta's Grove, near Savatthi. Now when the night was far spent, a certain deity, whose surpassing splendour illuminated the entire Jeta Grove, came to the presence of the Exalted One, and, drawing near, respectfully saluted Him and stood at one side. Standing thus, he addressed the Exalted One in verse: “Many deities and human being misunderstood about the blessing that be expected bring salvation; explain what is the highest blessing? Not to interact with fools, interact with the wise, honour those who are wothy to be honoured, This is the highest blessing.
Live in the right place, to have done meritorious actions in the past, and guide oneself to the right path, This is the highest blessing.
To have knowledges and skills, a highly trained discipline, and pleasant speech, This is the Highest Blessing.
Support father and mother, cherish the wife and children, working without any conflict, This is the highest blessing.
Giving and live according to Dhamma, Help relatives, working without blame, This is the highest blessing.
Abstinence from evil , Refraining from intoxicants, Heedfulness is all that is Dhamma , This is the highest blessing.
Respectfulness and humility, Contentment and gratitude, The right time hearing the Dhamma, This is the highest blessing.
Patience, Humble when being corrected, visiting the Samana, discuss Dhamma in the right time; This is the highest Blessing.
To have a spirit to live a holy life, Insight into the noble truths, And the realization of Nibbana, This is the highest blessing.
He whose mind does not flutter by contact with worldly contingencies, Sorrowless, Stainless, and Secure this is the Highest Blessing.
Since by doing such things as these, Human beings are everywhere unvanquished and go everywhere in safety. This is the highest blessing.
