By Not Seeing (4)

Saṃkhāra adassana (SN 33.9)

Thus have I heard:
The Exalted One was once staying near Sāvatthī
at the Jeta Grove in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.
Then the wanderer of the Vaccha clan
came to the Exalted One,
exchanged friendly greetings with him
and courteous compliments,
and sat down at one side.
Seated at one side
the wanderer Vacchagotta thus addressed the Exalted One:
Pray, Master Gotama,
what is the reason,
what is the cause
why these divers opinions
arise in the world?
Such as:
'The world is eternal,'
or
'the world is not eternal,'
or
'the world is finite,'
or
'the world is infinite,'
or
'what is the life,
that is the body,'
or
'life is one thing,
body is another,'
or
'the Tathagata exists after death,'
or
'the Tathagata exists not after death,'
or
'the Tathagata does and does not exist after death,'
or
'the Tathagata neither exists nor not exists after death'?"
"Through not seeing of the activities, Vaccha,
through not seeing of the arising of the activities,
through not seeing of the ceasing of the activities,
through not seeing of the way
leading to the ceasing of the activities.
That is how those divers opinions arise in the world,
such as:
'The world is eternal,'
or
'the world is not eternal,'
or
'the world is finite,'
or
'the world is infinite,'
or
'what is the life,
that is the body,'
or
'life is one thing,
body is another,'
or
'the Tathagata exists after death,'
or
'the Tathagata exists not after death,'
or
'the Tathagata does and does not exist after death,'
or
'the Tathagata neither exists nor not exists after death.'
This Vaccha, is the reason,
this is the cause
why these divers opinions
arise in the world,
such as:
'The world is eternal,'
or
'the world is not eternal,'
or
'the world is finite,'
or
'the world is infinite,'
or
'what is the life,
that is the body,'
or
'life is one thing,
body is another,'
or
'the Tathagata exists after death,'
or
'the Tathagata exists not after death,'
or
'the Tathagata does and does not exist after death,'
or
'the Tathagata neither exists nor not exists after death.'"
